Which Type of Auto Transport is Best for Your Vehicle?
We understand that you might hesitate before trusting your car to a shipping company, particularly if you aren’t sure about the process. There are several ways to get your car, truck, or recreational vehicle to your destination. Let us explain.
What to Consider When Choosing a Carrier for Auto Transport
When you decide to ship your vehicle from state to state, or even internationally, you have a few things to consider.
- Budget: How much are you prepared to spend?
- Timeline: How quickly do you need your vehicle to reach its destination?
- Location: Will you ship your vehicle to a terminal or a private residence?
- Weather: Do you mind if your vehicle is exposed to the elements during shipment?
The shipping method you choose may differ depending on all these considerations. For instance, if you have a classic car you’re presenting at a car show, you might put a little more thought into your shipping method than you would if you were sending a second-hand car to your college student. A PreOwned representative can give you the best options for your particular vehicle.
Common Types of Vehicle Shipping Carriers
There are 2 main types of vehicles: open-air auto transport and closed carriers. Open-air transport is the most common – and the most affordable, too.
One commonly used trailer for auto shipment is the multi-car trailer. Usually, these carriers are a good choice if you’re looking for a discount. They can haul several vehicles at a time. However, with such a big load, these trucks are slower and have a harder time navigating in residential neighborhoods. If your car is going to be shipped this way, you’ll probably want to have it shipped to and from a terminal. There are single-level or double-lever options, depending on the size of your vehicle.
Smaller trucks are available for single cars. In fact, a 1-car hauler flatbed, sometimes called a hotshot, is a great choice for short trips of less than 100 miles. These transport carriers can be more expensive, but they are often a little faster. They’re more maneuverable, which is perfect if you’re taking a recreational vehicle to a remote location, or if you’ve got a classic car you want to get somewhere quickly and safely.
Other Types of Carriers for Your Vehicle
Enclosed car carriers are an option if you are concerned about the elements and don’t mind paying a little extra. These premium carriers can protect your car from road hazards and bad weather. This is the best option if you want your car shipped in showroom condition.
If you are shipping your car internationally, you have options as well. If you’re shipping a vehicle by boat, you may be shipping in either an enclosed carrier or via a process we call RORO: roll-on/roll-off. This shipping method relies on a vessel designed for wheeled cargo.
If you require faster shipping overseas, you can even request air freight. Be aware, however, that this method is quite a bit more expensive.
